She danced along the river bank,
Those golden ringlets swaying behind.
And such a sweet song she sang
That even the birds dared not interrupt.
The deer came close and walked beside
Never had they seen such a lovely sight.
Now and then she stopped and bent
Plucking flowers and sticking them in her wrapping’s hem.
Cool winds blew, flowers fluttered, the water flowed
Life was glorious indeed, everything with spirit glowed!
The earth was bathed in golden light!
The sun shone brightly over the tree tops
She basked in the beauty, the glory of youth
So engrossed was she in herself,
In the blooming magnificence of the
day,
She failed to see the descent of the fiery globe
The cool breeze suddenly turned harsh
The flowers wilted, the song came to a close
The water dried and nothing remained.
But for the cracked dry sand in the bed
The sky for a second was ablaze with colors
As suddenly as the colors had come, they faded.
A dark moonless night spread its wings
And there she lay, wrinkled and forgotten
A victim of the inevitable doom.
The girl who had once
lived,
The flower that had once bloomed.
